Robot car: streets ahead in cities of the future

In this article by Alok jha that talk about the concept of the new generation of cars in smart cities and how it would be useful.

Since the big need of alternative instead of oil, many companies are racing to the lead of hybrid, solar and electric cars. AS the cities are getting developed, the cars are being developed too, so it would fit with the new smart cities. Smart cities will be smaller and more practical, so the cars should be as well as these cities. MIT is interested on cars that could stand the congestion, parking and less polluting. But these standards do not have to be in a small and tight car as the Smart. So MIT next step is to create stackable, shareable, electric cars. MIT car has no engine, the power come from devices called wheels robot. Wheels robot are wheels contain electric motor inside, which helps getting more space in the car.

In conclusion, GM motor will finish designing this car and starting to distribute it in Singapore first. Since that will these new concept of car will be accepted as the usual cars?

Each course in HCT English is required for its important knowledge that helps us in the other subjects. Well in general this course was about the bases on how to summering articles.

It looked easy on the first time, but it was not because it needed much concentrate. Summering is to mention all the ideas in article within few words. So whenever we miss an idea first we lose marks and deliver incomplete summarized article. Moreover, it looked useless but it is obviously people would rather to read an article with 300 words than one with 1000.

In the first of semester we barely knew how to summary, but with our great teacher Mrs. Molly with the dozens of tasks plus the projects and the presentations.

Task 7 : The waste of Stuff

Nowadays many elements contribute to global warming. In our daily life stuff are wasted dramatically the last decades. In this article am going to write about the consumption of stuff and how we could reduce this rate of solid waste in sources.

Solid waste is pollution. In 1990 statistics in America showed that each person wastes 2.04 KG per day of solids. Most of these solids are bottles, cans, plastic, newspapers and uneaten food. However, although people aware of this crisis, changing habits they have been doing for years is not an easy thing (Lee). While years go by, this waste is increasing with the consumption of the earth sources. Landfill method wastes solid inside layers mainly soil in many areas that could not be used again, so whenever there is more waste they will have to open new areas. Moreover, incineration is the common way to get rid of solid waste because it kills the bacteria and chemicals, but it also releases toxic gas into the atmosphere which is not good (DISCovering Science).

Fortunately, there are solutions to solid waste pollution. New recyclable materials are being produced to help reducing this waste. Each material among the stuff we use has a special method to recycle it. For example, papers are being recycled by machines and chemicals are added to remove the ink and produce new papers. Cans also could be recycled in processing factories to melt, wash, and mold into ingots. So there will be new cans from the old ones and many others can be used from these cans. Moreover, more areas can be saved from landfilling the stuff. (Bigham)

In conclusion, the waste of stuff, energy, and water could determine a new hard life style.solid waste pollutes over earth. So we have to reduce our consumption, waste of everything, use things where and when they are needed, and buy recyclable stuff. Otherwise, we will need more planets like earth, but we only got one.

Cool cities

While modern cities are contributing to global warming, there are methods to build cool cities that provide less polluting buildings and transportations as Masdar city. In this essay I will write three reasons why these cities are not practical for everyone.

First, it is impractical to build enough new cities for everyone. Let’s take Masdar as example of these cool cities. Masdar is a great project with great methods to reduce the big percentage of CO2 that is produced by our modern cities right now. But Masdar can only contain maximum of 50,000 people (Masdar’s green dream is not for all). The world population reached to approximately 6.6 billion people (World POPClock Projection). What will be the population in 2050? So more cities are needed with more space.

Secondly, these cities are hugely expensive. Masdar costs about $22 billion (Masdar’s green dream is not for all).Building one city with this huge price might be a problem around the globe. Many countries cannot afford building these cities unless they were rich and full with oil. So it looks that cool cities are considered as unique cities or just showing off the ideas of reducing CO2 on the rich countries.

Third, it is impossible for everyone to live zero- carbon lifestyle. People have various life styles that depend on the place they are living in. Masdar is a small place that will help to walk to work, GYM and groceries (Masdar’s green dream is not for all). Some people used to live in big places with big gardens so it will be difficult to change their lifestyle. Moreover here in the UAE, due to the hot weather for the most years we cannot live without cooling cars or use bicycles as alternative transportation. Although in the cool cities there is much great transportation, still it is hard to do.

In conclusion, it is foolish to suggest that cool cities are for everyone. I think that cool cities are a great method into a clean future that will reduce CO2 60%. But they should consider the most suitable conditions to fit with the most cities in the world so that the plan and the purpose of these cities will success.

My Carbon Footprint

The massive increase of people around the globe is affecting the earth by consuming energy that leads to release carbon dioxide. What is Carbon footprint? Carbon Footprint is the amount of carbon dioxide and greenhouse gases emitted by us in our daily life. I will report about me, my classmates, and other people from other country carbon footprints.

I looked up for three websites, hero of the UAE, my foot print and WWF carbon foot print calculator to check my carbon footprint. In heroes of the UAE I’ve been asked about my general uses of electricity, food, where do I live, how is my house, cooling, swimming pool, lighting, cooking and a lot of these questions about my life style. Most of the websites have the same categories as food, travel, home and other stuffs (Footprint calculator). Unfortunately my result showed that if everyone lived like me, we will need 2.31 earths!!

I compared my carbon footprint with three of my classmates Basel, Khaleel and Ali. I found that three of us were nearly the same between 2-3 planets needed. I refer that due the almost same life style we live and the same country. Then I compared with other people around the globe. In Europe I found that their carbon footprint was less than mine. Why is that? Their life style is completely different than ours. They walk, use buses than using cars separately. They already have cold weather so they will not use electricity to cool their houses like we do here. I look to the average of plants for the UAE and I found that equals 10.33 planets which mean that we have one of the biggest carbon footprints here (The size of your ecological footprint).

Carbon Footprint is one of the biggest reasons to Global warming. So at least we can reduce releasing CO2 by doing these simple steps every day, which really affects and reduce Carbon Footprint. For example switch lights and TVs that you are not using, waste less by recycling things as papers, magazines and cans. Reduce the need to travel instead of traveling every summer travel every two. Save water which most people do not. Accomplishing these simple things will really help and save many humans and animals lives.

Some reviews about An Inconvenient Truth.

An inconvenient truth had a great success with a purpose to spread the idea of global warming and how dangerous it is. Although of this success some people disagree with Algore or with the idea of this film and Al Gore’s intentions. In this Summary I will talk about the positive and negative reviews.

Negatively reviews about an inconvenient truth were few comparing with the positives. Although one of the reviews found Al Gore good speaker and presenting this movie by his self. It says that this movie does not seem about Global warming as it is suppose to be, but it is about Al Gore . He referred that to the scenes about Aglore’s life during the presentation. In his opinion in this movie Algore has done this movie to show his self more than pointing at global warming (Nash).

On the other side other, most of reviews were positively standing with Al Gore, they think that Al Gore did a great job in his movie specially that he presented it by himself. Moreover in one of the reviews I read, Al Gore was supported for what he has done in this movie to tell people about this fact that will happen, unless people react together, and how Algore referred to over than 100 researchers on his presentation. it concludes that there are no heroes or super stars to save the world, as long people could reach the moon and do many incredible things and it is not impossible to stop global warming(Ebert).

After reading and comparing these two reviews, although Al Gore is not a scientist to warn us about a sciene issue, I think he has done a wonderful movie. As a matter of fact I think that Al gore wants to help the world to stop global warming, open people’s eyes into this issue More than showing his self and let the world know more about him.

An Inconvenient Truth

An Inconvenient Truth is a documentary film was produced by Al Gore that discusses Global Warming. Global warming is the increase of earth’s and oceans temperature as a result of the increase of CO2. Al gore thought that he had an important alert message to tell the whole world about it when he recognize how it is dangerous.

Al gore lived hard times in his past, when his son had an accident that could kill him, but fortunately he made and Al gore did not lose hope which gave him a motive to try to save the world. When he was a politic he tried hard to spread the idea of how global warming is a national problem

Al Gore showed many causes and effects of Global Warming. The main cause is the incredibly increase of CO2 around the globe and the trapped radiations because of the thickness of the atmosphere as a result of pollution.
Many effects happened the past few years, for example in few years there will be no Kilimanjaro because glaciers are melting leaving nothing. And Storms that start when the oceans get warmer, as we saw many storms happened like Katrina.

Our global is full with problems; wars, financial problems and many things. But people must corporate to save their earth for the our children and the next generations.

Wednesday, March 4, 2009

Global warming recently has become one of people’s concerns because it may have a big damage in our global living balance. Global warming is the increase of the earth’s temperature as a result of increasing CO2 from technologies and factories. More over while the CO2 increases the thickness of the atmosphere increases too. As a result radiation of the sun will be kept on earth although it should be released in space. But the worst is that most people don’t take it seriously. This could be the major problem because everyone is responsible and could make a change. Global warming affects many places and mountains have melted. In the past few years of technology global situation has become worst, so in the future there might be no green earth like there used to be for our children and the new generations.

People must act now to reduce global warming; otherwise the earth will not be a good place to live.

Task 1 : personal details

My name is Darwish Saleh Hamad Mohammad Almansoori I was born in 17/10/1989 in a small family and I have lived in ABU DHABI, we were four, two sisters and one brother. My father was a fireman but he retired in 1995 and passed away in 1998. All of us my sisters, brother and I, were all in a private school since we were four years old until we graduated. My teenage years was the hardest part in my life till now, because I had to focus to achieve the best marks in school to be one of the best, working hard with less wasting time on other things than a teenager would do to get the satisfaction of my parent. Well in my free time I just to walk around to see what is happening around, but most of my free time I get deep in to the websites, chatting and playing online games and least but not last Xbox 360 and it is taking all free time.

Creating a blog with posting summaries could be hard and boring thing, but as we see blogging is a great element to improve our English with raising our computers skills and the creativity. And blogs make teacher and students or anyone around the world as long the blog is international, to get to know us more by writing about ourselves. At last in this semester we will be restricted by environment topics to be our project, that will be benefit to know about the environment and pass in the course.

What are UFOs? When did this phenomenon exist? Are UFOs real? Well UFO refers to UN

identified flying objects that was captured in the militaries radars. UFOs as known by many

people is a phenomenon was created by imagination. But there were some evidences about it in

many places around the world that might be real or easy to believe. Like the witnesses, the

weird crashes around the world. But it might be done by people to confuse people, because there
is no big consider about it. Also some people claimed that they saw UFOs and described it in

oval, cigar and many shapes. About UFOs many people was interested and curios but not a long

because the lack of evidences. I choose this topic because it was an interesting one and I wanted to know more about it.
